Interested in running a cafeteria or restaurant? There is a lot of things that you need to consider – from high business aspects such as business planning to smaller details such as where you are going to get your condiments.
It is in the details that many people get lost. Huge numbers of people don’t consider what it takes to run a restaurant. They forget, or don’t know, about all the aspects such as
1) How are you going to store all the plates?
2) How much space will washing cutlery and crockery take?
3) How much sugar will you get through a day?
But it is small details like these that can make or break your efforts into business.
Plate Caddy
Certainly one of the most overlooked factors when it comes to opening a food business is that of the plate caddy. Whilst new business owners might put a fair bit of thought into what crockery they are going to get, and how much, not many consider how this crockery is going to get stored.
But storage is a big issue when it comes to business. Every meter squared of real estate costs money – and the more space that is given to storage the less money you will be earning. Which is why a plate caddy is so useful.
A plate caddy is a method of storing plates in a space efficient manner, which makes it worth it’s weight in gold as the storage goes up rather than across. Large numbers of plates are simply too heavy to be stored on shelving units – so we need to find methods that allow vertical storage (minimising floor space) without crushing them.
A plate caddy is perfect for this – and as such a vital piece of equipment for any food business.

It can be hard to know what to do with all our plates. It starts off easily enough, when we are young and living away from our family for the first time there is only so much crockery that we have, and so storing it isn’t an issue.
But as we get older finding a way of safely storing away crockery that we don’t use everyday – whether it be simply party crockery we only want people seeing when we have large gatherings, or our ‘best china’ when we have important guests, those that we want to impress – can get difficult. Which is where the plate caddy comes in.
Plate Caddy
What is a plate caddy? Simply put a plate caddy is a piece of equipment that is designed to safely store plates, whether it is high numbers or simply a few special ones. They can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, depending on what your needs are.
A common version of a plate caddy is that which is often seen in restaurants and other large dining areas – such as the cafeteria in a large business building or hospital. This sort of plate caddy is usually a large plastic item that can hold dozens of plates if needed.
Usually they are wheeled to allow it to be moved around to where needed, and stored easily. Obviously plates can weigh a lot, and the more plates the more difficult the plate caddy becomes to move – so wheels on it are essential.
There are plenty of other types of plate caddy – one many people will be familiar with is the box plate caddy that they may have looking after their best china, small and easily stacked on a shelf. But that is just one type – there are many more styles of plate caddy available.
